Background information State and slavery

What does the project entail?

This project is an exploration of the current state of research on the Dutch slavery past and its ramifications. It shows which research exists and how it has been conducted and points out where the knowledge gaps are. The research explores the entire history of colonial slavery in (former) Dutch territories. In doing so, the research also focuses on the effects of the slavery past felt today.

State and Slavery is the first major study to map the role of the Dutch state and its predecessors in the history of slavery in its entirety. Bringing together all existing knowledge, it offers a new perspective on the role of the Dutch state in the history of slavery.

The research agenda builds on the knowledge from State and Slavery and details avenues for future research.

Which institutes are involved in the project?

Royal Netherlands Institute of Southeast Asian and Caribbean Studies (KITLV); The International Institute of Social History (IISH); The National Institute of Dutch Slavery History and Legacy (NiNsee), and The University of Curaçao are leading this research. The KITLV and IISH have ample experience in studies into the Caribbean and Southeast Asia and the related post-colonial (slavery) history of these regions. NiNsee has headed projects surrounding the recognition of the history of slavery since its beginnings. The University of Curaçao guarantees the involvement of all of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in the project. Together, the organizations were asked for this research project by the Ministry of Interior and Kingdom Relations as independent scholarly parties.

What is the role of the House of Representatives and the Ministry of Interior Relations?

The Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations is funding the project on behalf of the House of Representatives.

What is the role of the advisory board?

The advisory board  was composed by the Ministry of the Interior and Kingdom Relations. The members sit in a personal capacity and can provide advice (solicited and unsolicited) to the editorial board. The advisory board  is independent of the Ministry.
