Matthias van Rossum is a senior researcher working at the International Institute of Social History (IISH). His research focuses on the global history of labor, colonialism, slavery, and slave trade. He is project leader of the GLOBALISE project (2022-2026), which aims to develop a digital research infrastructure for the archives of the United East India Company (VOC). He is co-coordinator of the international database project Exploring Slave Trade in Asia, which aims to map the slave trade in the Indian Ocean and Indonesian archipelago. He will furthermore lead an NWO Vidi project that examines resistance and responses to enslavement in colonial trials, through testimonies of enslaved people and others.
